Although more visible than the other types of devices, these can be effective for helping people with more severe hearing problems. These devices however are more likely to have problems with feedback, a high pitched whistling sound. As well as their design hearing aids can be classed by the audio technology that makes them work. Both types have their advantages and disadvantages. Analog hearing aids produce electrical signals which are then amplified. It is possible to set these devices for each specific wearer. The patient can also make certain changes to make the device work better depending on whether they are inside or outside and the general noise levels at the time. Digital audio allows more flexibility when it comes to setting the device but is the more expensive technology. The digital devices can achieve a much higher quality of sound reproduction. Subtle, automatic adjustments of the sound levels can make these devices much more comfortable for the wearer and less manual adjustments allow the person to get on with more in their day. Nowadays the hearing aids that are available have improved dramatically with time and are more practical to wear and less obtrusive.
