The recently released Viera TXL37V10B LCD television is Panasonic's answer to the new trend of TVs adding compatibility with as many formats available. With a 37 inch (94cm) screen, limited Internet connectivity, and support for a wide range of video formats, the TX-L37V10B can handle almost any role. Panasonic quotes the TXL37V10B as having a 100,000 : 1 dynamic contrast ratio. This extraordinarily high number is meaningless because there is no standard for measuring dynamic contrast. A "dynamic" system varies the brightness of the backlight to keep from washing out dark scenes. The actual contrast ratio is a still-impressive 20,000 to 1. Real world performance can't match plasma or LED backlit sets, but it still manages impressive blacks and accurate colour reproduction. The unit has four HDMI input connectors, with one located on the bottom of the unit for access when the TV is wall-mounted. This is one of the first TV's not to include outdated S-Video and composite connections. There is an SD slot on the side for playback of digital video. Satellite service is supported with two SCART connectors, and Freesat HD can be used directly for free programming from ITV and the BBC. The remote control is very usable with its large, clearly marked buttons. Most functions can be accessed with a single push of a button, or with Panasonic's Viera Link interface, which has a very intuitive user interface. Internet access is handled by Viera Cast, although this acts as an on-line media center rather than a full Internet browser, as access is limited to a few pre-approved sites. YouTube is one of these approved media portals, although newly added videos may take a day or two to show up. Video performance is enhanced by the TX-L37V10B's ability to double video frames, going from fifty per second (50hz) to one hundred per second (100hz). The set has no special upscaling of standard definition video, but still manages to use the screen without looking stretched. The Viera has the same lack of space for speakers like other LCD screens. There are two small speakers inside the unit using Panasonic's V-Real ProSound surround sound, which can't produce much bass, but is acceptable for broadcast television. Those primarily buying this set for HD movies will want to add an external sound system, which can be connected via an optical output.
